Great Hill Country Breweries

Posted by Sharon Rosshirt on Monday, June 19th, 2017 at 4:47pm.

Austin is particularly well-known for its thriving craft brewing scene.  In fact, there are around 50 great craft breweries in Austin alone but the brewing doesn’t stop at the city limits.  The Hill Country has a rich tradition of brewing beer, creating craft liquors and delicious wines.  Today we are going to take a look at some of our favorite spots to get a drink in the Texas Hill Country.

Twisted X Brewing Company

Address: 23455 W RR 150, Dripping Springs, TX 78620

Twisted X is a brewery in Dripping Springs specializing in “Tex-Mex Beer”.  All of their beers are a special craft version of Mexican beers that you are familiar with, think Dos Equis or Victoria.  The difference at Twisted X is that they are brewed locally and use high-end craft beer ingredients.  These beers also commonly contain ingredients familiar in Mexican cuisines like jalapeno or mole.

The brewery features a great tasting room and a large outdoor patio perfect for a hot summer day.  The taproom is open 7 days a week typically until 6-8pm.

Jester King Brewery

Address: 13187 Fitzhugh Rd, Austin, TX 78736

Jester King Brewery is a gem on your way to Dripping Springs, TX.  The farmhouse ales that are brewed here have a uniquely Texan flavor to them since many of the ingredients are gathered from the land surrounding the brewery.  They offer free brewery tours every two hours on the weekend so you can learn how the beer is made. There is plenty of outdoor seating and a huge covered barn where you can get out of the sun and enjoy some Stanley’s Farmhouse Pizza.

Thirsty Planet

Address: 11160 Circle Dr, Austin, TX 78736

Thirsty Planet is 5 miles south of the Oakhill Y on the way to Dripping Springs, TX.  Committed to creating great beers and helping local charities, Thirsty Planet is a force for good.  With their three staple beers and a rotating seasonal menu, you will always find something new to try.

The brewery is only open on Saturdays from 11 am- 3 pm but you can always take a tour from wherever you are with their beautiful virtual tour.

Real Ale Brewing

Address: 231 San Saba Ct, Blanco, TX 78606

Real Ale is a Texas mainstay in the craft brew scene that has made beers for over 20 years.  The brewery is the furthest from Austin (at least by this articles standards) but is worth a trip out to Blanco.  The tap-room features special taps and experimental beers that are only available there.

The tap room is open Wednesday and Thursday from 12pm-6pm, 11am-7pm on Fridays and Saturdays and noon to 5 pm on Sundays.
